I woke up to a puddle on the windowsill last January. Not a little dew—a full-on drip that had already started to darken the paint underneath. I grabbed a rag, wiped it dry, and told myself I’d figure it out tomorrow. Tomorrow came, and the puddle was back, bigger. That’s when I stopped wiping and started fixing. Window condensation in winter isn’t just annoying; it’s a slow leak of heat, a breeding ground for mold, and a sign that your home’s humidity is out of whack. Why Your Windows Sweat in Winter (and Why It Matters)
Condensation happens when warm, moisture-laden indoor air meets a cold surface—your window glass. The air can’t hold as much water vapor when it cools, so it dumps that moisture onto the pane. In winter, the temperature difference between inside and outside is huge, so even normal household humidity (cooking, breathing, showering) can push the glass past its dew point.
A little fog on the glass isn’t the end of the world. But when water runs down and soaks the sill or the wall, you’re inviting mold, wood rot, and peeling paint. Worse, that damp air makes your heating system work harder, because moist air feels colder. According to ASHRAE standards, indoor relative humidity should stay between 30% and 50% for comfort and health. In winter, you want the lower end of that range—around 35–40%—to keep windows dry without drying out your skin or sinuses.
Fix #1: Lower Indoor Humidity—The Single Biggest Lever
I bought a simple digital hygrometer for $12 at the hardware store. It told me my living room was sitting at 58% humidity on a 20°F day. No wonder my windows were weeping. The fastest fix? Stop adding moisture to the air.
- Vent bathrooms and kitchens. Run the exhaust fan during showers and for 15 minutes after. Same for cooking—use the range hood, especially when boiling pasta.
- Cover pots while cooking. A lid traps steam that would otherwise escape into the room.
- Air-dry laundry outside or in a vented dryer. Indoor drying racks are a major humidity spike.
- Move houseplants away from windows. They transpire moisture, and near cold glass, that water ends up on the pane.
Within two days of these changes, my hygrometer dropped to 42%. The puddles shrank to a few beads on the bottom edge. No dehumidifier needed.
Fix #2: Crack a Window for 10 Minutes a Day
I know—it sounds insane to open a window in winter. But a short, sharp burst of ventilation flushes out the moist air without chilling the whole house. The trick is timing.
Open two windows on opposite sides of the house (or one window and an exterior door) for exactly 10 minutes. This cross-breeze swaps the humid indoor air for cold, dry outdoor air. The walls, floors, and furniture stay warm, so the room re-heats quickly once you close the window. I do this mid-morning, after showers and breakfast steam have peaked.
Safety note: don’t crack a window overnight or when you’re away. That’s a draft that will freeze pipes and waste heat. Keep it short and supervised.
Fix #3: Use a Window Condensation Absorber (DIY or Store-Bought)
For windows that consistently sweat despite humidity control, a moisture absorber placed on the sill can help. I tested two options.
Store-bought: Silica gel packets in a breathable pouch. They’re small, reusable (just microwave them to dry out), and cost about $10 for a two-pack. They work well for single windows but need frequent recharging in high-humidity rooms.
DIY bucket: A plastic container with calcium chloride crystals. Drill holes in the lid, fill halfway with crystals, and place on the sill. The crystals pull moisture from the air and drip into the bucket below. A 2-pound bag lasts about two months. I made one for my worst window—the north-facing bedroom—and it collected about a cup of water per week. The trade-off: it’s a little ugly, and you have to empty the liquid without spilling.
Neither solution is a cure-all, but they buy you time while you address the root cause.
Fix #4: Apply Window Insulation Film or Shrink Wrap
This is the fix that surprised me most. A clear plastic film taped around the window frame and shrunk with a hair dryer creates a dead-air space between the film and the glass. That air gap raises the surface temperature of the inner pane, so condensation has a harder time forming.
I bought a kit for $15 at the hardware store. Here’s how to apply it without a mess:
- Clean the window frame thoroughly—any dust or oil will break the adhesive seal.
- Apply the double-sided tape around the entire frame, not just the top and sides.
- Press the film onto the tape, leaving a little slack.
- Use a hair dryer on medium heat to shrink the film. Start from the center and work outward, smoothing wrinkles as you go.
After installation, my bedroom window—which had been dripping every morning—stayed completely dry. The film is nearly invisible once shrunk, and it peels off in spring without residue. The only downsides: you can’t open that window while the film is up, and it’s not reusable.
Fix #5: Seal Drafts Around Window Frames
Even a small gap around the window frame lets cold air seep in, cooling the glass further and making condensation worse. On my old windows, I found drafts at the top of the sash and along the sides where the weatherstripping had turned brittle.
I used V-seal weatherstripping (also called tension seal) for the sides and top of the moving sash. It’s a strip of plastic that bends to create a tight seal when the window closes. For the bottom, where the sash meets the sill, I applied a foam tape. Cost: about $10 per window.
If you see cracks between the frame and the wall, fill them with paintable caulk. Don’t caulk the sash itself—you still need to be able to open the window for ventilation and emergency egress.

If you buy one, don’t run it around the clock. Set it to maintain 40–45% relative humidity. Anything below 30% dries out wooden frames and trim, and makes the air feel uncomfortably cold. I borrowed a small 30-pint unit from a friend and aimed it at the basement window. After a week, the condensation stopped, and the musty smell disappeared.
Energy note: dehumidifiers generate heat, which offsets some of the heating cost. But they also use electricity—about 500 watts for a typical unit—so it’s not free. Use it only where other fixes haven’t worked.
Fix #7: Upgrade to Double- or Triple-Pane Windows (Long-Term Fix)
If you’ve tried everything and your windows still sweat, the glass itself is the problem. Single-pane windows are essentially a thermal bridge to the outdoors. Double- or triple-pane windows with low-E coatings and argon gas fill keep the inner surface much warmer.

- Condensation on the interior walls around the window—this suggests a leak or missing insulation.
